The first mini-summer transfer window has now closed and Newcastle United have yet to announce a major signing.

Newcastle United’s only deal in the first ten days of the window was the capture of highly-rated Malaga winger Antonio Cordero. The 18-year-old will move to St James’ Park next month – although he is expected to leave Tyneside this summer with the club eyeing a loan deal so he can continue his development elsewhere.

Whilst the window has been open for just ten days, it is open again next week and it’s still over two months until the new season gets underway, seeing the Magpies go without a major signing has started jangling a few nerves within the fan base. After all, Eddie Howecalled for the club to act with speed in the market just over a fortnight ago.

“Speed is key for us and I have reiterated that many times internally,” Howe said following their final day of the season defeat against Everton. “Speed is key because we have to be dynamic, we have to be ready to conclude things very quickly because good players don’t hang around for long.”

Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha were both wanted by Magpies, but have moved elsewhere this summer whilst Bryan Mbeumo seems destined to join Manchester United. Interest in James Trafford is well-known, but days continue to tick by without a signing.
