Newcastle United’s chase of Marc Guehi could be boosted by Matt Targett – with a suggestion that Crystal Palace would be open to the left-back heading to Selhurst Park as part of cash-plus-player deal.
The Magpies remain interested in Guehi but despite only having 12 months left on his deal, Palace are still thought to be holding out for a fee in the region of £50million. With United looking to strengthen in several positions this summer, every penny counts, and for many paying a fee of that nature for a player in the last year of his contract is deemed too high.
However, speaking on The Monday Show via The Everything is Black and White Podcast – sponsored by Saily – host Andrew Musgrove shared the view point that Targett could be offered to Palace as a way to drive asking price down.
“I’ve been told that Matt Targett could potentially hold the key,” he said. “Now we know Targett is probably going to leave this summer, but interestingly, it has been said that he could move this deal along slightly because Ben Chilwell has gone back to Chelsea after he was on loan at Palace as back up to Tyrick Mitchell.
“Now they want another left back to provide that competition, but really back up to Mitchell, and maybe that could be ideal for both Newcastle and Matt Targett. It has been suggested that Palace would not be against the idea of taking Targett as part of a cash per player deal.”
Targett was signed by Toon boss Eddie Howe on a permanent deal in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of £15million after impressing on a initial loan spell in the months prior.
