Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich has expressed deep respect for Portugal ahead of their clash in the UEFA Nations League Final Four, despite Germany’s strong historical record—winning 11 of their last 19 encounters and losing just three.
“That’s not something we’re focused on as a team,” Kimmich said, “Both squads have changed a lot since 2021. This will be a completely different match.”
With Germany dealing with numerous injuries, the squad heading into the competition will differ significantly from the one seen during the March international break.
“We’re concentrating on the players we have now,” Kimmich said. “Of course, it’s frustrating to be missing so many players, but talking about those who aren’t here won’t help. We still have enough quality in the team to win both games.”
The German captain is set to make his 100th appearance for the national team on Wednesday—a major milestone.
“It means a great deal to me,” Kimmich reflected. “It’s a huge honor to have played so many games for Germany. It shows I’ve maintained a high level over the past 9-10 years, and I’ve mostly avoided injuries. There have been highs and lows with the national team, but it’s an honor to be part of it. Hopefully, there’s more ahead.”
When reminded that he’ll be the 14th German player to reach 100 caps—but the only one among them without a World Cup title—Kimmich laughed.
“There are still opportunities,” he said with a smile. “It just means we haven’t succeeded in past World Cups. We need to do better. Even at the EUROs, we felt the bond between the team and the fans, despite not winning. That’s what we aim for. Whether we win the biggest titles depends on many small factors, but we’ll prepare as best we can. We’re on a good path.”
**Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has earned even more caps than Kimmich, remains a major threat, according to the German midfielder.**
“I read that he’s scored 130 or 132 goals for his country,” said Kimmich. “That’s a massive number. Ronaldo’s consistency is incredible—he’s been performing at the top level for over 20 years. Representing your country like that is remarkable. For me, just reaching 100 caps is something I’m already very proud of.
