Zak Starkey Declares Commitment to WHO: “I Belong Here, I’m Not Leaving Anytime Soon – Not in My Next Life”

Renowned drummer Zak Starkey has firmly responded to recent speculation surrounding his future in music and his high-profile departure from The Who. In a passionate and defiant statement shared with fans, Starkey declared, *“I belong here. I’m not leaving anytime soon — not in my next life.”* His words come amid a whirlwind of reactions following the news that he had parted ways with the legendary rock band after nearly three decades behind the drum kit.

Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and godson of The Who’s original drummer Keith Moon, had been a central figure in The Who’s modern era since officially joining the band in 1996. His style, reminiscent of Moon’s explosive energy yet refined by his own musical sensibility, helped carry the iconic band through decades of performances and tours across the globe.

The split came after a controversial moment at the Teenage Cancer Trust concert in March 2025 at the Royal Albert Hall. Frontman Roger Daltrey abruptly criticized Starkey mid-performance, complaining about the drum volume and allegedly blaming it for performance issues. While fans were shocked by the public nature of the comments, Starkey took time to reflect before making a statement — and now, he’s made it clear: he’s not backing down from the music world.

In a recent conversation, Starkey addressed the rumors with resilience and optimism. “I’ve been a musician all my life,” he said. “I’ve played with the greatest — and I’m just getting started. This is my place. This is who I am. You don’t walk away from your soul.”

The drummer also acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation, especially given the long-standing personal and professional history with The Who. Despite the abruptness of his exit, he showed gratitude for the journey and affirmed that music — and his place within it — remains his true calling.

Fans have rallied behind Starkey, praising his heartfelt message and expressing excitement for what’s to come. His declaration has also sparked anticipation around his upcoming projects, including the release of new music with his band SSHH and a collaborative charity album featuring a superstar lineup including Elton John, Slash, Iggy Pop, and his father, Ringo Starr.

Beyond music, Starkey is working on his autobiography, promising a candid look at his extraordinary life growing up in rock royalty, carving his own path, and weathering the storms of fame and creativity.

While his chapter with The Who may have closed, Zak Starkey’s story is far from over. If his recent message is any indication, the next act will be as bold and uncompromising as the drummer himself. As he said, *“I belong here. I’m not leaving — not now, not ever.”*

His beat goes on.
