Andy Griffith is remembered by many as Sheriff Andy Taylor from *The Andy Griffith Show*, or as the lawyer Matlock, and even for his gospel singing. However, his career began as a comedian with his famous routine, “What It Was Was Football.”
In the 1950s, Griffith’s routine was a comedic take on football, portraying a hick who was baffled by the game played in what he described as a “cow pasture.” The humor lay in his complete misunderstanding of football’s rules and objectives, referring to the ball as a “pumpkin,” and other amusing misconceptions.
Today, such humor might not resonate as it did back then, especially given our familiarity with the sport. Many people around the world call soccer “football,” but in American football, the kicking game plays a crucial role. A notable football coach once claimed that the kicking game—encompassing all special teams play like kickoffs, field goals, punts, and more—constitutes a third of the game.
When we talk about the kicking game, the focus often shifts to those who actually handle the kicking duties. Alabama’s team is well-equipped in this area. They have Kneeland Hibbett, a three-year long snapper who has been recognized on the Mannelly Award watch list for the nation’s best snapper for the second year in a row and is also an All-Southeastern Conference selection. James Burnip, a standout punter, is a Ray Guy Award finalist and a 2023 All-America and preseason All-SEC pick.
The placekicking position, in particular, is under the spotlight as the new kicker will need to follow in the footsteps of Will Reichard, who holds the record for the most points scored in college football history. The contenders for this role are Graham Nicholson, a senior transfer from Miami of Ohio who won the Lou Groza Award last season, and Conor Talty, a redshirt freshman.
Nicholson had an impressive 2023 season, converting 27 of 28 field goals, with 10 from over 40 yards, and ending his career with 60 field goals. Talty, a top-rated kicker from Chicago, served as a backup last year and made a minimal impact during his limited opportunities. His recent performance in Alabama’s spring A-Day Game was not particularly strong.
Following a recent scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Coach Kalen DeBoer commented on the placekickers’ progress. He noted that the kickers have been adapting to the stadium environment over the past week and a half, which has been beneficial for their visualization and depth perception. DeBoer emphasized that while the practice field consistency is crucial, translating that performance to game conditions is key.
Punter James Burnip, an Australian redshirt senior, had a strong season last year with 59 punts averaging 47.6 yards, including a long of 67 yards. DeBoer praised Burnip’s excellent performance throughout camp, noting that his consistency has been impressive, particularly in specialized situations like pinning opponents inside the 10-yard line.
Overall, there is much anticipation that Alabama’s special teams will excel this season, potentially being the best in college football.
