The transfer rumour mill is in full swing once again, with a constant stream of names — many previously unfamiliar to Arsenal supporters — being heavily linked with a potential move to the club.
In fact, we have compiled the first 20 players currently being touted as possible Arsenal targets — though there are many more circulating, and we will continue to add to this list as the window progresses.
In previous seasons when we have run similar features, we have eventually tracked around 120 different names, with only about three per cent of those players actually signing for Arsenal.
What stands out is the apparent tactic used by some clubs: floating completely fabricated stories about interest in other players to act as a smokescreen while negotiating the real deal.
This approach, it is suggested, helps keep journalists distracted and allows the actual transfer to be completed quietly. While some dispute this theory, it is difficult to explain how so many rumours — approaching 97 per cent — ultimately prove untrue. How can so many outlets be consistently wrong?
Of course, as outsiders we cannot know for certain, but one recurring pattern is that when a player suddenly appears on lists of those Arsenal are supposedly trying to sell, it often signals the opposite — that they are being used as a cover story for interest in someone entirely different, sometimes from a completely unrelated club.
Nevertheless, the stories keep coming, and it makes for entertaining reading as the window unfolds. At the end of the summer we will review how many of these predicted transfers actually materialised. The historical success rate remains around three per cent.
