BRIGHTON REACH AGREEMENT TO SIGN MYSTERY BELGIAN DEFENDER IN SUMMER BOOST
Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly reached an agreement to sign highly-rated defender Luka De Winterman from Belgian Pro League side Royal Antwerp in a deal that has surprised many across Europe.
The 22-year-old centre-back, who is considered one of Belgium’s rising defensive talents, is set to become the latest young player to join Fabian Hürzeler’s exciting project at the Amex Stadium. Sources close to the negotiations claim the Seagulls have agreed a fee worth around £18 million, with personal terms also believed to be settled.
Brighton have been searching for defensive reinforcements this summer following concerns over squad depth and the possibility of departures in the back line. The club’s recruitment team identified De Winterman several months ago and have been monitoring his progress in Belgium.
The defender enjoyed an outstanding season for Royal Antwerp, making over 35 appearances in all competitions and earning praise for his composure on the ball, aerial ability, and leadership despite his young age. His performances attracted interest from clubs in Germany and Italy, but Brighton moved quickly to secure his signature.
Speaking after the agreement was reached, a source close to the negotiations said:
“Brighton presented a clear sporting project to the player. They believe he can develop into one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and Luka was convinced immediately.”
De Winterman is expected to travel to England in the coming days to complete his medical examinations before signing a five-year contract.
Manager Fabian Hürzeler is understood to be delighted with the move, viewing the Belgian defender as a player capable of making an immediate impact while also possessing enormous long-term potential.
Brighton have built a reputation for identifying talented young players before they become household names, and many supporters believe De Winterman could be the club’s next success story.
The announcement is expected to be made official next week, with the defender potentially joining the squad for pre-season training shortly afterwards.
Should the deal be completed, Luka De Winterman would become another exciting addition to Brighton’s growing collection of young European talents as the Seagulls prepare for another ambitious Premier League campaign.
