Breaking: Utah Governor Says Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing Refusing to Cooperate with Authorities
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is refusing to cooperate with investigators. Robinson was arrested 33 hours after Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while addressing students at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday evening.
Speaking on Sunday morning talk shows, Cox said Robinson has not confessed to the crime, though people close to him have been assisting investigators. “We’re interviewing all kinds of people—everyone that knows him—and trying to learn more about what the motive actually was,” Cox said.
Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet while speaking at a Turning Point USA event, part of his nationwide American Comeback Tour. The organization, which Kirk co-founded, has been influential in promoting conservative views across college campuses and mobilizing young Republican voters.

Cox noted that Robinson’s family and friends described him as being “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” though investigators have not yet established whether political leanings motivated the attack. Among those cooperating is Robinson’s partner and roommate, who is currently transitioning from male to female. Authorities, Cox said, do not believe the partner had any involvement or prior knowledge of the shooting.
Further scrutiny has come from reports in The New York Times, which revealed Robinson allegedly joked on Discord after the shooting, suggesting his “doppelganger” was being blamed. Cox confirmed that investigators are aware of those conversations. “It was all joking until he admitted that it actually was him,” Cox told ABC News.
Robinson ultimately surrendered to police on Thursday and was charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. He remains in custody at Utah County Jail without bail.
Governor Cox has repeatedly urged calm in the wake of Kirk’s death, calling the killing a “direct assault on America.” He also reiterated his criticism of social media, which he has labeled a “cancer,” arguing that platforms fuel division and misinformation.
Charlie Kirk, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, was a polarizing figure in U.S. politics. Supporters praised him for addressing issues they felt were ignored, while critics accused him of spreading disinformation and targeting minority communities.
Kirk leaves behind his wife Erika and their two children. Erika delivered an emotional tribute on Saturday, promising her husband’s “voice will remain.” A public memorial service will be held on September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, where Kirk lived with his family.
