Carlos Alcaraz won his second French Open title on Sunday, and the Spaniard’s $2.8 million prize money has seen him climb up the list of tennis’ all-time highest earners

Carlos Alcaraz has climbed the ladder of tennis’s richest players after his triumph at the French Open.

The young sensation defended his title in a grueling five-set final at Roland Garros on Sunday, all the while thinking of Rafael Nadal. The victory earned Alcaraz a substantial $2.8 million prize, propelling him to seventh place on the list of tennis players with the highest career earnings.

With 20 ATP Tour titles and five Grand Slams to his name, Alcaraz’s total prize money is estimated to be around $44.7M. His recent French Open win also allowed him to overtake Pete Sampras, who reportedly earned just over $43M before retiring in 2002.

According to the official ATP site, Alcaraz has already amassed $6.8M this year alone, boasting four titles and an impressive record of 37 wins and five losses.

His most profitable season so far was in 2023 when he ended the year with a staggering $15.1M in earnings, a year that also saw him secure his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon by defeating Novak Djokovic.

However, if Alcaraz hopes to surpass Djokovic’s best single-season earnings this year, he still has a long road ahead. The Serbian legend, holder of a record 24 Grand Slam titles, reportedly earned a jaw-dropping $21.1M in 2015.

Unsurprisingly, the 38-year-old tennis icon tops the list of all-time highest earners in the sport, boasting a whopping $187M in prize money. And with Djokovic still in top form, it’s likely he’ll continue to add to this impressive total.

Alcaraz is poised to boost his earnings when he returns to Wimbledon this summer, aiming for a third consecutive victory in London. While the exact prize money for this year’s Grand Slam remains undisclosed, Alcaraz reportedly raked in $3.6M from the event last year.
