This past weekend, Darby took an unofficial visit to the University of Alabama, igniting speculation and curiosity across the college football recruiting landscape.
The visit, which took place during Alabama’s final spring recruiting weekend before the summer dead period, was Darby’s first trip to Tuscaloosa since last fall. Although he remains publicly committed to LSU, Darby made it clear that Alabama has maintained consistent contact and continues to make a strong impression.
“I had a great time up there,” Darby said following the visit. “They treated me like family. It’s a first-class program all around, and you can feel the tradition as soon as you step on campus.”
A four-star prospect from Prattville High School in Alabama, Darby is rated among the top ten defensive linemen in the country and one of the top overall players in the state. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing around 285 pounds, he possesses the blend of power, quickness, and technique that top programs covet in a defensive tackle. His dominance on the high school field has made him a priority for several SEC programs, even after his early commitment to LSU.
During the visit to Alabama, Darby spent time with the coaching staff, sat in on positional meetings, and got an up-close look at the Crimson Tide’s training facilities and academic support systems. Most importantly, he had extensive one-on-one time with new Alabama defensive line coach Freddie Roach and head coach Kalen DeBoer.
“Coach Roach is real,” Darby said. “He doesn’t sugarcoat things, and I respect that. He showed me how they see me fitting into their scheme, and we watched a lot of film. They want me to be that disruptive interior presence, someone who can control the line and get after the quarterback.”
Darby also noted that DeBoer made a strong impression on him. While many fans have wondered how the departure of Nick Saban would impact Alabama’s recruiting, early feedback from prospects like Darby suggests that DeBoer is continuing the program’s high standard in building relationships with elite talent.
“Coach DeBoer was straight-up with me,” Darby said. “He told me they’re building something special and that I can be a part of it. He’s different from Coach Saban, for sure, but he brings his own energy. You can tell the players believe in him already.”
One aspect of the trip that stood out to Darby was Alabama’s emphasis on player development and preparation for the NFL. A strong academic showing, particularly in support for early graduation and career planning, also impressed Darby’s family.
“My mom and dad came with me, and they really liked how Alabama handles academics,” he said. “They showed us everything—how they track progress, how they help guys graduate early, and even how they prepare players for life after football.”
Darby emphasized that although he remains committed to LSU, he wants to be thorough in his process. With the recruiting calendar more hectic than ever, and NIL opportunities playing a growing role, top prospects often take multiple visits even after announcing verbal commitments. For Darby, it’s about making the most informed decision possible.
“I’m still solid with LSU,” Darby said. “I love the coaches there, and I feel like it’s a great fit. But I owe it to myself and my family to see everything out. Alabama is close to home, and they’re not giving up.”
Darby’s recruitment is expected to stay active over the coming months, with additional visits potentially on the table before he signs in December. Both LSU and Alabama remain focused on locking down elite defensive linemen in the 2025 class, and Darby is a centerpiece in those plans. While some fans may interpret his Alabama visit as wavering, Darby said it’s more about doing his due diligence than second-guessing his commitment.
“I think it’s important for recruits to take their time,” he said. “This is a decision that affects the next three to four years of my life. LSU knows I’m still all in, but they also understand I want to make sure.”
The visit comes at a pivotal time for Alabama as they look to restock their defensive front under a new coaching regime. Securing in-state talent like Darby would be a major win for DeBoer and his staff, especially as they look to rebuild momentum in the state following Saban’s departure.
Darby, meanwhile, is preparing for his senior season at Prattville, where he will anchor one of the top defenses in the state. He’s planning to take official visits in the fall but has not finalized his schedule.
